Europe 2.1 - London, Wimbledon, Stonehenge, Bath








Things got off to an interesting start at LAX, where the check-in line was slow and we missed the flight to Gatwick (via Dallas). We thought the next available flight might not be available for several days, but the check-in lady was nice enough to put us on a direct flight to Heathrow on the same evening, thus losing only 3-4 hours. We ended up on the same flight as my co-worker.

The gloomy weather upon arrival at Heathrow was depressing...overcast with slight drizzle...typical English weather! Stayed 1 night at Hyatt and checked out Oxford St. shopping, then stayed the rest of the week in Wimbledon with Mike and Grace. It was great to catch up with them...Mike and I go way back to high school (about 16 years ago...so half my life time!). I ate a lot of cornish pastries, which are not commonly available in the US.

Highlights include hop-on/hop-off of the typical tourist attractions around London, checking out Harrod's, the day trip to Stonehenge (amazing and mystic location, the first structures were erected at 3,000 BC) and Bath (nice getaway from London, with Roman Baths, Bath Abbey and Georgian architecture). Tip for Bath though - DON'T get sucked in to try the Sally Lunn's bread. It's a total rip and not worth 7 pounds.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports were covered with unusually thick fog which resulted in MAJOR flight cancellations and delays. We were concerned that our flights to Athens and Prague would be affected, but thankfully no problems were encountered.

Four days in Athens was probably too long (3 days would be enough). Anyway, we continued our vacation, flying into Berlin (Schnofeld airport) at 7 PM then took the Airport Express train (RE14 route) and efficient U-bahn (U2 line) to the Hyatt at Potsdamer Platz. Our first impressions of Berliners was not good - the train ticket collector was rude, and the local I asked for directions to the hotel simply ignored me. The check-in staff at the Hyatt were very friendly and helpful, providing a detailed and personal tour of the hotel, room and club lounge. The hotel itself is very modern, with spacious shower/bath tub combo design. The bathroom also has a small LCD display and volume adjustable speaker of what the TV in the main room is showing. I think we will incorporate these features into the house we will eventually build. I enjoyed Berlin best out of the 3 stops (London, Athens, Berlin), maybe because of friends (Mike/Grace and Chris/Simone), or perhaps Berlin is simply a very interes

A History of Mobile Phones

I thought it might be fun to look back at the list of mobile phones I've ever owned, starting with the classic Nokia 2110 back in 1996 for the purpose of receiving calls for job interviews during my final year at college. Nokia 2110 - classic and chunky Nokia 5110 - nearly everyone had one of these ubiquitous phones Siemens SL45 - advanced for its time, with built-in MP3 player and expandable memory card. Sleek looking phone. Sony Ericsson T68 - my first mobile with color screen. Navigating through the phone's menu was on the slow side. It had Bluetooth which I didn't realize at the time. According to Wikipedia, this was Sony Ericsson's first color screen phone Vodafone/Sharp GX10i - this was dubbed the "Beckham" phone as he was heavily featured in TV ads. My first flip phone as well as first camera phone. With polyphonic ring tones! Motorola V360 - first mobile when working in the US. Nothing fancy. Good solid phone. M

Best. Comeback. Ever.

Just found out the Bluebaggers staged one of the best comebacks of all time against the hated Bombers. The young guys in the team showed spirit to come back from 48 points down. With all the young talent already at the club, I think we're just a few players away (CHF/CHB) from returning to the finals. Our new midfield looks good with Walker, Murphy and Gibbs sure to improve. Bentick has a chance to become the new Ratten as the in-and-under, hard ball winner. We also have Stevens and Scotland manning the middle. With Bradley and Ratten coaching the midfield, we could have the best midfield in the AFL. Go Blues!
