US and Canada Trip

Earlier this month, Wendy and I did some traveling with my parents (visiting from Australia) and showed them around the US and Canada. Highlights were:
  • San Diego - my birthday, Old Town (feels like Mexico), coffee at Hotel del Coronardo, fresh sashimi at Sushi Ota and seafood dinner at Oceanaire
  • Palm Springs - outlet shopping and relaxing at Hyatt's spa facilities
  • Las Vegas & Grand Canyon - 2 Cirque du Soleil shows (KA and Love) at 50% discount
  • NYC - mum's birthday, Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, dad catching up with his friend Holman
  • Niagara Falls & Toronto - Maid of the Mist boat ride, mum catching up with her cousins, Toronto's bustling Chinatown
  • Ottawa - Not too much, other than Wendy and I renewed our US visas
  • Montreal - Interesting city with a definite French feel (both in everyday language and architecture)

Best. Comeback. Ever.

Just found out the Bluebaggers staged one of the best comebacks of all time against the hated Bombers. The young guys in the team showed spirit to come back from 48 points down. With all the young talent already at the club, I think we're just a few players away (CHF/CHB) from returning to the finals. Our new midfield looks good with Walker, Murphy and Gibbs sure to improve. Bentick has a chance to become the new Ratten as the in-and-under, hard ball winner. We also have Stevens and Scotland manning the middle. With Bradley and Ratten coaching the midfield, we could have the best midfield in the AFL. Go Blues!

Europe 2.3 - Berlin

Four days in Athens was probably too long (3 days would be enough). Anyway, we continued our vacation, flying into Berlin (Schnofeld airport) at 7 PM then took the Airport Express train (RE14 route) and efficient U-bahn (U2 line) to the Hyatt at Potsdamer Platz. Our first impressions of Berliners was not good - the train ticket collector was rude, and the local I asked for directions to the hotel simply ignored me. The check-in staff at the Hyatt were very friendly and helpful, providing a detailed and personal tour of the hotel, room and club lounge. The hotel itself is very modern, with spacious shower/bath tub combo design. The bathroom also has a small LCD display and volume adjustable speaker of what the TV in the main room is showing. I think we will incorporate these features into the house we will eventually build. I enjoyed Berlin best out of the 3 stops (London, Athens, Berlin), maybe because of friends (Mike/Grace and Chris/Simone), or perhaps Berlin is simply a very interes...

Europe Update #4 - Florence & Rome

We only had 1 day in Florence. In retrospect we didn't need the 3rd night in Venice. Florence was too rushed. The hotel we stayed at was family-run - the staff were very helpful and friendly. Ask me if you want to know the hotel name. Went to the Uffizi and Academia Galleries and saw Michelangelo's David and other masterpieces by Leonardo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Botticelli (where was my favourite turtle, Donatello?!?). Michelangelo was involved with more than arts - he studied anatomy (by dissecting the deceased) and helped plan the city's defences. I thought he just ordered pizza take-outs! The Church was impressive from the outside, but I was surprised to find it barren inside. The guide explained that Florence used to be a republic and despised the aristocatic lifestyle where the citizens are sent to war. They said, FOCK THAT, we don't need war if we have money!
